Arts on Stage Archive

Launched in the 2014-2015 season, Newark Symphony Hall's Arts on Stage is a program aimed at giving emerging artists, primarily local, an opportunity to display their talents without the burden of renting a performance space. The program provides the artists with a performance space, usually our Black Box Theater (Newark Stage) or the Terrace Ballroom, which seats 200 and 800 respectively. Theater staff and basic equipment are also provided. In exchange, the artists provide the talent and help market the event.

This series aligns with our mission to nurture promising artists, support the cultural scope of community arts opportunities and move the economy forward. Our objective is to provide our patrons with outstanding community programming featuring the local artists they love, or will fall in love with. We feel that through this program local artists, given a chance to practice their craft, increase the likelihood of broadening their markets regionally and eventually nationally.

Famous for its classic architecture and beauty, The Hall's deep historical and cultural Newark roots date back for over eight decades. For almost a century, renowned artists graced its stages, enriching the lives of all, and The Hall's leadership honors that legacy and is unified in believing that efforts must provide better spaces and services to spotlight all artists.

Surely Goodness and Mercy
October 6 - October 14, 2017

Writers Theatre of New Jersey is proud to open its 2017-2018 season with Surely Goodness and Mercy by Newark, New Jersey playwright, Chisa Hutchinson. Tino is a 12-year old boy in one of Newark's public schools. Picked on by fellow students for his studiousness and love of reading the Bible and harassed by his aunt who became his guardian after the violent death of his mother, he befriends Bernadette, the school lunch lady who doesn't like kids. When Bernadette's life is threatened, Tino teams up with Deja, a young girl in his school, to lend a hand. This unlikely trio shows us how empathy and love can make a difference in the face of impossible odds.

We've Got The Victory: A Gospel Musical
Friday, December 16, 2016

Celeste Bateman & Assocs., LLC presents "We've Got The Victory: Stories, Songs, Music and Dance Inspired by the Bible." Victory, conceived, written and produced by Celeste Bateman, weaves stories, music, dance, narration and songs into a drama with music that loosely traces the Bible from The Creation to The Resurrection. The production premiered in 1999 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. It later traveled to Rio's in New York City and back to Newark where it was performed at Bethany Baptist Church. Audience members were moved to their feet by familiar traditional and contemporary Gospel songs and hymns and performances by talented artists from the greater Newark community. The December 16th performance will feature Five Women Performance Ensemble. The ensemble was founded in 2015 by Ms. Bateman and was the recipient of a grant from the Newark 350 Committee (a body organized to celebrate Newark's 350th anniversary) to develop and perform a piece that paid tribute to the city's famous female vocalists, among them Whitney and Cissy Houston, Connie Francis, Melba Moore, Queen Latifah and Faith Evans. "We've Got the Victory" also features the Solid Rock Players, an ensemble of actors, narrators dancers and musicians who move the story along under the guidance of Musical Director Gail Lou DeSandies and Assistant Musical Director Linell Andrews.
